Why Choose WRTI?
The Wildlife Research and Training
Institute (WRTI) has taken a significant step in advancing fisheries training
with the operationalization of its fish farm, located at the Inland Waters and
Wetlands Research Center on the shores of Lake Naivasha. This project marks a
significant milestone with the institute’s commitment to offer hands-on,
practical training for students pursuing a Diploma in Fisheries and Aquatic
Sciences and a Certificate in Aquaculture.
Recent upgrading of the facility has
transformed the fish farm into a fully functional learning hub. The renovations
that were carried out included the restoration of existing fish ponds and the
hatchery, construction of new circular ponds, and installation of essential
infrastructure such as raised water tanks and installation of a new water pump.
These establishments will ensure that our students have access to a modern
learning facility equipped for comprehensive practical training in aquaculture.
On Thursday 6th February
2025, Fisheries students actively participated in practical exercises,
dedicating their time to critical aspects of aquaculture practices. Their
hands-on learning experience covered key areas such as brood-stock harvesting
and selection, sex identification, fingerlings grading, and water quality
management. These activities are vital in equipping students with the requisite
technical skills required in the fisheries industry, making them more
competitive in the job market.
The operationalization of the fish farm
reinforces WRTI’s position as a leader in experiential learning and research.
By bridging the gap between theory and practice, the institute ensures that its
graduates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the national
sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture development
As WRTI strives to expand its facilities and training programs, prospective students and interested parties are invited for greater opportunities of skill development and industry collaboration. The WRTI fish farm stands as a testament to the institute’s dedication to producing competent fisheries professionals ready to drive innovation and sustainability in the sector.
